Sporobolus heterolepis, commonly known as Prairie Dropseed, is a native ornamental grass valued for its fine texture, graceful form, and fragrant late-summer blooms. This low-maintenance ornamental grass forms neat, arching clumps that add softness and movement to borders, native plantings, and mass landscapes.
Why You’ll Love It:
• Fine, emerald-green blades with a fountain-like shape
• Airy pinkish-tan flower panicles in late summer
• Lightly fragrant blooms (often described as coriander-like)
• Rich golden-orange fall color
• Excellent native ornamental grass for mass plantings
• Drought tolerant once established
• Deer resistant and long-lived
• Provides winter texture when left standing
Prairie Dropseed is ideal for naturalized landscapes, edging, pollinator gardens, and low-maintenance designs. Its tidy habit makes it suitable for both formal and meadow-style plantings.
