August through September is an excellent time to plant bare-root peonies in most climates. Planting in late summer or early fall allows roots to establish before winter, resulting in stronger plants the following spring.

In very hot southern climates, if daytime temperatures are consistently above 90°F, planting may be delayed until cooler weather. Store the root in a cool, dry place until planting.
